Coinbase is a regulated financial service business. We have various, um, licenses to do that. Part of those licenses requires us to have a quote reasonable program to monitor for suspicious activity. There are privacy preserving coins like Zcash which have something called a view key. I think the world would be a better place if there were more privacy coins because it's kind of like the internet when it first came online.
