The way things are exerts a powerful force to shape the way that people behave and act. And so if you look, for example, at brewing, you can look at something like brewers guilds form in the 15th century. Women were in brewers guilds as wives of brewers and as widows of brewers. Their status within the guild was from their household status, not from being a freestanding brewer.
