The Irish Catholicism and the Health Crisis

The only actual fully Irish character in the play is very explicitly kind of called out as dumb and silly. It gives one pause to think that there was a time where you could just go down to the pharmacy and get morphine. Edwin is contracting tuberculosis or consumption as they still call it in this family, which did happen to O'Neill. He did have to go spend some time in a sanatorium.
