In 15 22, just one year after he heard news of cortez's exploits, pizarro returned to adventuring. He joined a company heading south along panama's pacific coast,. determined to find out the truth about the rumored cities of gold that were supposed to lie to the south in a land called beru. The men ate raw crabs and shellfish as well as berry s from the shore, which turned out to be poisonous and made them severely ill. They had enough money for only two ships, and they set sail in november 15 24. It was the worst possible season for sea travel, and pizarro's usual bad luck prevailed. Rain and storms
