Ezekiel: An Early Example of an Apocalypse
The book of Ezekiel is not exactly an apocalyptic text, although you might consider it as a text that could be used by later apocalyptists. Apocalyptic texts tend to emphasize not that God's punishing his people, but the forces of evil are punishing his people. The idea of a journey to heaven and hell is found in early Christian apocalyptic traditions. And so Dante's more in that line scholars call those kinds of texts, catabasis texts.
