Is the Word Fascism a Floating Signifier?
When people are using the word fascist today, it sounds to me like the thing that we are looking back in particular on from the 1920s and 30s is actually not uncommon within history. So what we've got to do here is distinguish between two very different ways of usingword fascist. One is as a technical term of political science in what's called taxonomy in classifying a political phenomenon. This is using the word which has come out of the context where it's called technically by people who study semantics,. It could actually float around and be applied to all sorts of things.
