Ponzi schemes promise above average returns, but they always like fail in the long run. Charles Ponzi convinced thousands of investors back in the 1920s to invest in particular companies. He was unable to pay off later investors and he received a prison sentence. Enron's accounting firm shredded thousands of documents once they found out what Enron was doing.
