The Athenians and the Peloponnese

The Athenians sent 30 ships to the Peloponnese under Asopius, the son of the recently deceased Formio. The Archarnanians insisted that any future commander in their lands should be some relative of the daring Athenian general who had defended them so vigorously and effectively. But they declined involvement after two humiliating defeats to Formio the previous year. When the mighty Lonian ambassadors returned to Lesbos, burying the news that Athens declined their offer, all of the lesbian cities, except for Mithimna, openly declared war on Athens.
