The First Amendment and the University Context in the United States
The First Amendment is much more limited than how the court interprets it now. The mission of the university is pretty restrictive relative to thinking about free and free in general for a long time, he says. Free speech for students I think really comes much later is really a 1960s innovation, right? And so because that's what universities ought to be doing, asking hard questions and expanding the range of knowledge, the students aren't in any position to do that, writes John Avlon.
