Catullus's poetry was famous for a few hundred years in Rome, revered by fellow poets. It was viewed as both the forerunner to the later poets like Virgil and Marshall. That intensity that Pound celebrated was not unknown to the agents of his fame. Yet his poems were almost completely lost. There was only one known poem of his that you could read in a ninth century anthology.
