The Cognitive Unconscious
Cognitive scientists have been talking about the cognitive unconscious for a long time. It allows us to get through the day without having to consciously evaluate everything we do. In an experiment, you're not asking in general, could this be conscious? You're asking, can the response in this experiment be explained by a conscious state? That's a very specific question scientifically. So just to summarize the short answer is that you should actually assume that behavior is unconscious unless proven otherwise.
