Niels Bohr and the War on Atoms
Niels Bohr arrived in Los Alamos on the last day of 1943. His first question to Oppenheimer was is it big enough? Is the gadget going to be big enough to end all war? That was actually part of the way that they were thinking about this weapon, rationalization for doing it. They not only wanted to beat the Germans to building this thing because they feared German. The Germans could use it to win the war but also thought that it might be so horrible a weapon that it would impress upon humanity that we could never fight another global war like World War II.
