Consent Forms Fail Patients
The Harvard IRB mandated a four-page consent form listing all possible risks, including the risk that the patient would be harmed by the aspirin tasting bed. Patients could not participate unless they signed that they had read and understood the consent form while in the middle of having a heart attack. The US recruited patients 100 times slower, relative to population, than the UK, delaying the trial six months.
