Augustino chose to attempt the project in a single massive slab. With the block cut, he chipped away some of the stone that he knew would be shed in the sculpting process to lighten the monolith. He brought a hole between where the legs would be. And then he commissioned a small army of movers to haul the thing over land and sea to Florence.
