The Conflict Between King and Pope
The king and pope worked together to achieve society's goals. This was a lived form of subsidiarity. Ecclesiastical law was much more than that dictated by the pope. And law bore relatively little resemblance to modern statute law. A man could be excommunicated for rebellion, as shown by contemporary use of complex terms analyzed exhaustively by jones.
