Resilience and Resistance: Echoes of the Past
This chapter explores the desperate attempts of an enslaved woman to protect her children from the horrors of slavery while navigating the risks posed by the Fugitive Slave Law. It also highlights the courageous acts of Black individuals like Carrie Johnson, who defended their homes during the violent racial riots of 1919, and discusses the founding of the Black Panther Party as a movement for community defense and welfare. Through these narratives, the chapter connects historical struggles for freedom with contemporary issues of justice and self-defense.
Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Kellie Carter Jackson, associate professor of Africana Studies at Wellesley College, to discuss her recent book We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s decision to ignore the federal courts, Vought’s killing of the CFPB (and the CFPB union’s response), DOGE’s access to the Treasury’s payment systems, the USAID shutdown, Trump’s attempted worker buyout, major tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum, Steve Wynn’s SCOTUS case, NIH funding, and Texas’ measles outbreak, before expanding on the devastating impact of Trump’s attack on the administrative state considering how much of this country is either employed by the government or funded by the government. Professor Kellie Carter Jackson then joins, diving right into the conception of her work “We Refuse” amid her ruminations on the anger she felt about the failure of the 2020 protests and their ultimate “wins” to create any real systemic change, with much of America’s white majority – and certainly the political class – choosing rebrandings over relinquishing any of the power and control granted by the position and privileges of whiteness, providing no new protections for the reactionary backlash that followed, as it does any period of racial reckoning in the US. Professor Carter-Jackson then looks to the particular failure of our current conceptualization of non-violent action, reflecting on the long history of radical Black leaders – including the ones we often remember as icons of non-violence – acknowledging the importance of and employing the use of force in the fight for racial equality, before stepping back to walk Sam and Emma through the devastating breadth of what forceful resistance to White Supremacy, and its violent institutions, can look like, from the devastating choices that faced her Grandmother and Great-Grandmother over their personal freedoms well after the Civil War to the stories of Margaret Garner’s escape from slavery and Carrie Johnson’s escape from a lynching mob. Expanding on this, Kellie discusses the evolution of the Black Panther Party from an organization centered around combating police brutality to efforts to expand Black Americans’ access to nutrition, healthcare, and education, proving very quickly the greater fear of a healthy, literate African American population than an armed one, before she, Sam, and Emma wrap up the interview with a focus on the central importance of joy when it comes to resistance, providing solidarity, fortification, and uplifting the most marginalized, and where the ongoing resistance to growing fascist power in the US can and must go from here. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into Trump’s official attempt to illegally transfer 30 Venezuelan migrants to the Guantanamo offshore detention center, watch Hakeem Jeffries passionately proclaim his impotence as Democratic leader in the House, and emphasize the need for a new era of Democratic leadership that actually acts on threats to democracy and their constituents’ well-being. Kristi Noem asks us to just trust Elon Musk with our data, and the MR Crew parses thoroughly through Joe Rogan’s futile fight against facts as he and Bret Weinstein parse through the best lies about USAID they can get their hands on, plus, your calls and IMs!
