Baseball and softball players wear thumb guards because it serves multiple purposes. It protects your hand from injury but also puts the bat out in your fingers, where you have the best grip. The guard on the market at the time "didn't feel right felt awkward and bulky to me" So without knowing it, he began the process of inventing his thumb card.
