Rural communities needed the city just as much as the city needed them. Chicago's grain elevators and mills were where capitalistic alchemy of transforming prairies into wheat, forests into lumber and livestock into meat for the masses took place. A city the size of Chicago could never have emerged out of the American prairie without millions of surrounding farms and ranches feeding its growth.
