Thoreau had no secrets, he would carry you to the heron's haunt or even to his most prized botanical swamp. He pulled the wood chuck out of its hole by the tail and took the foxes under his protection from the hunters. The farmers who employed him as a surveyor soon discovered his rare accuracy and skill. His visits to Maine were chiefly for love of the Indians.
