In the past, people have been willing to treat criminality with frontal lobe lobotomies. These programmes have often been associated with eugenics and lots of different strategies which have been dubious in many ways. So there's an urgent need to distinguish morally bad practices from morally acceptable ones. And I'd certainly rather go through electro-convulsive therapy than being crucified or burned at the stake or publicly disemboweled.
