In the 1950s, ads were targeted at women who stayed home with their families. You bought mailing lists for men 36 to 49 who had purchased a luxury car this year. This kind of segmentation existed to take a reasonable guess at how to talk with a person so that that person would buy something. We still use demographics to some degree today, especially in larger organizations.
