There is a legitimate role for the federal government in making sure states can't, can't do some awful things. The substantive restrictions on what states aren't allowed to do are still still largely there. It seems that we're at this impass where you you see the partisan advantage opposing any rule that you think might have a partisan advantage to the other side,. not no principle really involved.
