San Martin's Controversy Over Guayaqil

San martin had sent 12 hundred men under colonel santa cruz, up to help sucre defend guaaquil and liberate quito. When word got out, bolivar thought it was libelous propaganda that had been cooked up by san martin's enemies. But underneath different exteriors, both were doing exactly the same thing, sizing each other up. Both would unfortunately leave very disappointed in the other.
