Learning to Read Is Like Learning to Talk
By the early 1960s, New Zealand had done away with the Janet and John books. The new idea was that beginning readers shouldn't be focusing on learning to read words. They should be focusing on getting meaning from what they were reading. This new approach to teaching reading was called the book experience approach in New Zealand. In the United States, it came to be known as whole language.
