How Do You Write a Mystery?

For his first few mysteries, i was a total pancer. I rot myself into a corner in book three. So i started outlining after that. Now i make notes about things like that. But before it would just be like, oh, i want to do this. And even though i wasn't outlining, per say, i were like, jot and note at the bottom of the document to say, you know, something i wanted to do coming up,. or like a clue, real or false, that i wanted to put in there.
