The Origins of Temples in Mesopotamia
Temples were far, far more than houses of worship. Worshippers might bring statues with their names to plead for the god's attention. A temple wasn't a singular building, but a place whose history went back and back into the distant reaches of a city's past. Kings recorded their gifts to the gods and their building projects on the gods behalf in writing. It was something they wanted to broadcast to their people and anybody else who would listen.
