Anders and the Man With the Mask
I think Anders is oblivious because he is used to having a very sarcastic attitude toward everything, everything that happens. And I think he's become as many narcissistic personalities do become unaware that other people exist or have emotions. He doesn't really understand the danger he's in. That's part of the beautiful tension of the first part of the story. The fact that he could find the gun making him ticklish is incredible.
