There's a fantastic book, A Woman in Berlin, which is an anonymous book about the history of the rapes and women trying to protect themselves by finding one sort of Red Army officer who might protect them from this. It was an absolute scourge. And yet I remember interviewing not just one, Wehrmacht veterans in the 1980s when I did a huge series of interviews, and more than one said, well, you know, it's better to be raped than to be killed. That was their logic.
