The Influence of Voltaire on the French Salon Culture
Voltaire's influence was almost purely negative. By his wit, he scorched up all the reverence remaining in the minds of men for the forms of the old, outworn, feudal catholic organization. He partly created and partly reflected the prevalent tone of the french salon culture of the eighteenth century. The name of montesquieu, 16 89, 17 55, must also not be omitted from the list of its literary precursors. Central among them was baron dolbach, the anonymous author of the celebrated system of nature.
