Wagner is the first and largest state-linked business of private military contractors operating in Ukraine. It's also appeared in a number of places around the world where Russia has had an interest, including Syria,. One expert estimated that at its peak Wagner provided about 10,000 soldiers in Ukraine. But it also has a reputation for being quite brutal and journalists have reported torture, killings and rape.
