The Origins of Public Education in the United States

At this point, most people still didn't have a formal education. But there was a market shift towards schooling away from home by the mid 1800s. And this is when formal education really emerged in the US. So during a 25 year period between 1840 and 1865, an array of elite middle class and highborn reformers became acutely conscious of the structures of authority which children experienced as they grew up. They discovered mothers as educators and the paternal state as an educational agency.
