missionary activity in China started with partially Catholic missionaries centuries before the Opium Wars that started in 1838. The big flood of missionary activity happens at the end of the second Opium War with the Treaty of Tianjin in 1858. They're able to go into small cities, county towns and start to proselytize. And they're actually starting to kind of insight backlash by a lot of what they're actually doing on the ground.
