Since Lucas and I have been married for over two years, he was given a regular green card. Our lawyer told us that we were actually lucky because if we had gotten married less than two years ago, he would have only received what's considered a conditional residency. When you become a citizen by successfully going through the naturalization process, you no longer have to worry about renewing your green card. Although a green card permits you to go in and out of the country, some border officials can stop you at their own discretion and do extra questioning.
