The War on Horses
There were many horses wandering around the battlefield who survived. Some of them had legs blown off, but others were physically intact. Almost all of them were gathered up about a month after the battle and graded. And most of them were graded on fit for further use by a whole unit of Union troops. They were assigned to shoot these horses one by one in the head. That really messed with a lot of them apparently and soured them on the war more than any other duty they had.
