The History of Voodoo Rituals

In the run-up to the Civil War, laws regulating the slave population and restricting interaction between different racial groups really started to tighten up. In 1850, a group of women were arrested in New Orleans while taking part in a voodoo ritual near Lake Pontchartrain. They claimed that they had been unlawfully detained and denied their freedom of religion. This touched off a series of arrests that summer and in the ensuing years. At least two of these incidences involved Marie LeVoe.
