1.4% of all deaths worldwide are attributed to suicide, making it the world's leading cause of violent death. More people from 800,000 per year die from suicide than from all wars and homicides combined. People may be trying to make things better for others by giving up their own bodily oppressions in an act of 'altruistic suicide' It is quite possible that a propensity for altruistic suicide could have been selected in humans like honeybees or ants.
