In 1981, when Condors were down to just 22 birds in the wild, many a lover of the big birds really opposed trying to rescue them again. The Bay Area Audubon Society was like, don't do it. Let's not breed any more Condors. Rich Stalka did stop the Condor captive breeding program and has flown himself to the Great Beyond. He passed away from leukemia in late 2012 at age 67. But by the time of his death, the number of living Condors had swelled to 405 with only 179 of them in captivity.
