The premise of counterpart is that at some point in the late 1960s during the Cold War, there was some kind of physics accident. There's an underground passageway in a government building in Berlin where if you walk through, you come out in Berlin,. It's like the world divided into two. But anybody who was born before 1984, therefore, has a counterpart in the other universe.
