Simon Winchester: The land is now, as Gerald O'Hara was unaware, is disappearing. In the eastern United States in the last decade, a mere 13,000 acres has been lost to sea level rise. Whole countries are facing this now, places that we care a little for, Kiribati, Tuvallu out in the Pacific and low-lying coral atolls. We're going to have to re-evaluate our attitude towards it.
