Not a Girl: A Story of a Troubled Upbringing
Shania's parents did encourage her to pursue singing and actually loved country music themselves. Shania said that even as a small child, my mum and I quote, would put me up on the countertops and I would sing for the people at the restaurant. She went on pretty much anywhere that my mother could find an audience, that's where she brought me to sing. It was my mother's dream for me to become a professional singer. Her relationship with her stepfather is complicated because amongst the violence, they were also joyful memories.
