I remember writing essays and things on bleak house at university. I did a dissertation on it. And i know dickens was actually quite cross that people thought he was making it up, or exaggeratingor all kind of falling for an urban myth an a. He quite roundly accused hiss his detractors of not understanding the truth of the spontaneous combustion. And people thought the same of jarndyce. There is this feeling in the book that he's moving into an almost modernist, symbolic kind of literature where he's, you know, which is a fantastic and brilliant caricaturing of the world.
