Women in World War II

American women were not allowed to participate in active combat roles in World War II. US Army and Navy nurses grew in numbers during the war with 11,000 women serving in the Navy Nurse Corps and 50,000 in the Army Nurse Corps. Women became mechanics, both vehicle and aircraft, parachute rigors, air traffic control operators,. drivers, some even became instructors teaching male service member specialties such as aerial gunnery. 432 women were killed and another 88 taken prisoner.
