Theology and Philosophy in the Universities of the Middle Ages

Natural philosophers used aristotelian philosophy to probe the big questions of existence and knowledge. They were pious christians, but thought of theology and philosophy as two largely separate spheres. The first documented case of academic censure at the university of paris happened just a few years after its birth in 12 o six. Master americ of ben was found guilty of false teaching on the grounds that he advocated pantheism. There are about 50 known cases of academically related judicial proceedings for erroneous, false teachings in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
