The State Sponsored Opium Trade in Manchuria

In the thirties and forties, japan was averaging about 500 drug related arrests a year. By the late fifties, that number spiked to over 15 hundred a year. Heroin and morphine were commonly abused by those injured in the war who were prescribed opiates as pain killers and then became addicted to them. The military itself probably shares at least some responsibility for this booming drug trade because of its sponsorship of that trade in manjuria.
