I jumped ship from signal last year, when images were being sent to chats they didn't belong to. The network effect is really difficult, of course. It's a little harder with three more because while it's open source, it does cost a bit of money to download. My family and friends and I tried XMPP with conversations and then matrix by way of element. And they were so awful and unreliable for them that I almost lost them all together on switching to anything but SMS.
