The Stoics would engrave striking maxims in their memory, often written in an incurritiant. The meditations by Marcus Aurelius is a clear example of this. In the Stoic exercise of premeditatio malorum or negivitualization, we are to think of poverty, suffering, and death. We must not be afraid to think in advance about events which other people consider unfortunate,. And embrace our fate, whatever happens, because it does not depend on us.
