Jim Hill's railroad was the only one that didn't go bankrupt during the large depression. He would immerse himself in details of the business through reading and correspondence. As a size of his shipments he would remorselessly, meaning ruthlessly, leverage railroads to deliver the coal at preferred rates. Eventually he's going to sit on the other side when it comes to negotiating with railroads.
