The Mercali: A New Scale to Measure Moment Magnitude
The moment magnitude scale is based on the modulus of rigidity in the rock. It's basically how much energy is released. The Mercali, modified Mercali, or perhaps Mercelli,. What did you see? Mercelli. I'm calling the modified Mercali. And this goes from once to 12 and it basically just measures how much damage happened.
