There were in certain queer spaces on linek like slash spaces, which is relationships between characters of the same gender. That goes back to kirk and spock from startreck kirk slash spock. The earliest known fan fiction that pares up these two for more than friendship, is from 19 74. But the intenet really allowed slash fiction to take off. You would see phrases like slash wink bandied around,. i think people kind of look on that a little bit more fondly than the concept of queer baiting.
