The Deca Lea War

Deca Lea was a fortified outpost, equidistant from both Athens and Boetia. As landed estates in Attica were constantly being ravaged, the increased demand for imports necessary to feed the vast population led to an inevitable rise in prices. The Spartans had placed their triremes at anchor near Eropis on the attic coastline and blocked the overland supply route coming in from Eubia. Ultimately, the mines were forced to close, and so Athens was cut off from tapping into its rich veins of silver. By the end of the war, the Athenian silver supply would be so low that they would be forced to melt dedicatory works of gold in order to mint
